SEED CYCLING 101: OUR GUIDE

Most people I speak to have never heard about the incredibly healing practice of seed cycling, which is in part what inspired me to develop our Seed Cycle Phases. I wanted to introduce an accessible outlet in offering both the education + resources needed to embark on this amazing holistic journey.

Rooted in ancient practices, seed cycling is the consumption of specific seeds to support hormone balance and production. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, seed cycling aligns with the principles of nourishing the body with foods that support specific organ systems, embodying the notion of “food as medicine”; in this case, the spleen + kidney meridians play key roles in hormone production and regulation.


THE PHASES

SEED CYCLE PHASE 1

BALANCES / HARMONIZES / NOURISHES


Seed Cycle Phase 1 is formulated to bring a level of groundedness to the entire body, addressing hormonal imbalances and supporting the body’s natural rhythms. We crafted this blend as a means of providing relief from menstrual discomfort and to promote overall well-being.


+ FLAX SEEDS: Contain compounds that help balance hormone levels, modulating estrogen activity. 

+ PUMPKIN SEEDS: Rich in zinc, a mineral essential for hormone regulation. 

+ HEMP SEEDS: Provide a source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are precursors to prostaglandins (hormone-like substances that regulate inflammation and hormone synthesis). By supporting prostaglandin production, hemp seeds contribute to hormonal balance and overall well-being.

+ CHAMOMILE: While not directly impacting hormonal levels, chamomile powder has calming properties that can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Chronic stress can disrupt hormone balance, so incorporating stress-reducing herbs like chamomile can indirectly support hormonal health.

 

SEED CYCLE PHASE 2

INVIGORATES / REVITALIZES / SOOTHES

Seed Cycle Phase 2 is our follow-up blend to Phase 1, continuing on the journey towards enhanced hormonal balance. This seed blend offers a harmonious recipe of ingredients, all intended to nourish and revitalize bodily functions from within. 

+ SUNFLOWER SEEDS: Contain selenium, a mineral that supports thyroid function and hormone production; selenium is essential for the conversion of thyroid hormones which play a crucial role in metabolism and energy regulation.

+ SESAME SEEDS: Rich in lignans, similar to flax seeds, which have phytoestrogenic properties. These compounds can help modulate estrogen activity in the body, promoting hormonal balance. Additionally, sesame seeds contain zinc and other nutrients that support overall endocrine health.

+ HEMP SEEDS: Provide omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that support prostaglandin production and hormonal balance.

+ CHAMOMILE: Contributes to stress reduction and relaxation, indirectly supporting hormonal balance by mitigating the effects of chronic stress on hormone levels.

Seed cycles provide immense support for menstrual health; the ingredients we’ve blended provide essential nutrients and phytochemicals that help regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate symptoms that allude to hormone imbalance. Phase 1 helpes relieve common menstrual discomforts like cramps and bloating, while Phase 2 supports hormonal balance throughout the entire cycle. Flax seeds in Phase 1 help regulate estrogen levels, easing symptoms of PMS, and Phase 2's sesame seeds provide essential nutrients for hormone synthesis and balance.

Pumpkin seeds in Phase 1 offer zinc which is crucial for immune function and fetal development.

THOSE EXPERIENCING PERI MENOPAUSE + MENOPAUSE

Seed cycling is a holistic avenue of support for individuals navigating perimenopause and menopause. Phase 1's flax seeds help regulate estrogen levels, easing symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings, while Phase 2's sesame seeds support hormonal balance and bone health. Pumpkin seeds in Phase 1 provide zinc, which may alleviate symptoms like hair loss and vaginal dryness. 

FOR MEN

Although traditionally associated with women's health, seed cycling can provide immense hormone support for men by bringing equilibrium to their entire hormonal landscape. Phase 1 provides zinc, crucial for testosterone production and prostate health, supporting male reproductive function. Phase 2 offers selenium, which supports sperm motility and vitality. Both phases contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids which contribute to overall well-being.


RECIPES

SMOOTHIE

INGREDIENTS:

  • Coconut water

  • Seed Cycle Phase 1 or Phase 2

  • Banana

  • Spinach or kale

  • Strawberries

  • Mango

  • Pineapple

Add all ingredients to a blender. Use enough coconut water to fully cover all frozen or fresh ingredients. Blend until smooth and enjoy. Add ice to thicken to desired consistency. 

SUPPORTIVE STRAWBERRY CHIA BOWL

INGREDIENTS:

  • Chia seeds

  • Coconut milk

  • Nut butter of choice (I love a cacao/hazelnut blend for this recipe specifically)

  • Seed Cycle Phase 1 or Phase 2 

  • Fresh strawberries

  • A pinch of sea salt

  • Manuka Honey

METHOD: 

  1. Soak chia seeds in coconut milk; thoroughly incorporate and mix in a spoonful of honey + a pinch of sea salt. 

  2. Refrigerate the mixture for about half an hour or until chia seeds have soaked up much of the coconut milk.  

  3. Assemble your chia bowl - scoop a generous helping of nut butter on top, sprinkle on a teaspoon of the Seed Cycle of your choice, and top with fresh sliced strawberries. Enjoy!
